PRESS RELEASE
PEMRA ISSUES SHOW CAUSE NOTICE TO ARY NEWS FOR AIRING IRRESPONSIBLE REMARKS ABOUT ALLAH ALMIGHTY
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a show cause notice to ARY News for its programme titled “The Reporters” where Mr. Arif Hameed Bhatti passed irresponsible remarks about Allah Almighty.
Airing of such content is in violation of several clauses of PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2007 and Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.
PEMRA has directed ARY News to reply to the show cause notice within seven days, that is, on or before September 15, 2017 explaining their position.
Moreover, Chief Executive Officer of ARY News is also called upon for personal hearing on September 15, 2017. In case of failure to reply within the stipulated time and non-appearance for personal hearing, the Authority shall have the right to initiate ex-parte proceedings.
This going to be a dangerous trend. Blasphemy is a sensitive issue. Earlier both ARY and Geo played it against each other but the regulator refrained from poking it’s nose into it.
But now indulging in this Pemra is setting an example that may lead to fanning religious sentiments.
Pemra should handle such matters with care and communicate such TV channels in private to deal with blasphemy issue. Pak Destiny
