Turkish entry idea spices up 3G spectrum auction

By Asma Shaukat

Islamabad, March 6 (Pak Destiny) In order to coerce the mobile phone companies to buy 3G spectrum on high rates, the PML-N government says it is considering allowing foreign telecom companies especially Turkish to take part in the bidding.
As the five local cellular companies – Mobilink, Ufone, Telenor, Zong and Warid – have shown reluctance in buying the spectrum on high price, the threat of selling the same to a foreign company may do the trick. And they may agree to pay the government the desired amount for the license.
Government wants to generate $2billion from the sale of three licenses to the companies. But the companies have termed the expected money unrealistic suggesting it to expect not more than $1billion.
Let’s see if the government’s trick works. By the way Sharifs are preferring Turkey in any kind of business in Pakistan be it metro or waste management. – Pak Destiny
