Embarrassing moments for Sartaj Aziz and PML-N government in India

By Iram Salim

(Pak Ddestiny) The PML-N government on Sunday cut a sorry figure in India after the Modi government did not allow Adviser to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz to hold a scheduled press conference on the sidelines of Heart of Asia Conference.

The Indian government showed an expected bias but poor Aziz perhaps had no idea. The Indian government cited “security reasons” for stopping Aziz from holding the press conference and ordered him to hurry up in packing off to your country.

Pakistan could have avoided this embarrassment had the Nawaz government showed some ‘manly courage’ and refused to send Aziz to India. Not only India thrashed Aziz but also Afghanistan joined Modi in Pakistan’s bashing.

Opposition in Pakistan say the country continues facing this kind of embarrassment till Nawaz Sharif’s government gives a tit for tat reply to Modi government.

Today’s Indian gesture was a sheer violation of diplomatic norms as Aziz was also barred from leaving the hotel premises and the media persons were not allowed to meet him in the hotel. What a shame…

Furthermore, the Indian authorities stopped Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit to enter the Media Centre set up at the conference venue. Arguments took place between High Commissioner Basit and security officials on his interaction with the Pakistani media persons.

Later in the day, after returning from Amritsar, Aziz addressed a press conference in Islamabad and tried to cover up the embarrasment he and the country faced at the hands of Modi government. – Pak Destiny
