Dharmendra, Bollywood’s Beloved ‘He-Man’, Passes Away at 89
Bollywood mourns a titan: Dharmendra, the enduring legend known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, has passed away at the age of 89 at his home in Mumbai.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol in Punjab in 1935, he came from humble beginnings and rose to stardom through talent, charisma, and an unmatched work ethic.
His film career spanned more than six decades and included over 300 films, making him one of the most prolific and beloved actors in Indian cinema.
His journey began in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, but it was in films like Sholay (1975) — where he starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan — that he became an icon.
He was known for his rugged charm, physical presence, and versatility — able to lead action films, comedies, romances, and more.
In recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, in 2012.
Outside of acting, Dharmendra briefly served in politics — he was elected to India’s Parliament and served from 2004 to 2009.
Dharmendra’s personal life was also much in the public eye: he is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur, and his later partner and actress, Hema Malini, along with their children — many of whom followed in his footsteps in the film industry.
His final appearance will come in the upcoming film Ikkis, scheduled to release posthumously, adding a poignant coda to a cinematic legacy that shaped generations.
Leaders and fellow artists have poured in tributes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Dharmendra’s passing “the end of an era,” praising his charm, depth, and the way he brought a powerful humanity to every role.
At Dharmendra’s cremation in Mumbai’s Pawan Hans crematorium, many Bollywood heavyweights — Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan — joined to pay their respects.
Dharmendra’s legacy is not just in the films he made, but in the hearts of millions who saw in him strength, vulnerability, and an abiding connection to the common man. He leaves behind a cinematic kingdom built on sincerity, grit, and timeless performances. His loss will be deeply felt, but his memory will live on.
Om Shanti, Dharmendra Ji.
