From alleged romance to courtrooms —  Momina–Chadhar saga and Its uncertain climax

By Irum Saleem

What began as a private relationship between a television actor and a provincial politician has evolved into one of Pakistan’s most closely watched celebrity-political controversies, drawing in law enforcement agencies, political leaders, social media commentators and millions of online spectators.

At the centre of the storm are television actor Momina Iqbal and Punjab Assembly member Saqib Chadhar, whose competing narratives have transformed a personal dispute into a high-profile legal battle.

The controversy erupted when Momina Iqbal publicly alleged that she had been subjected to prolonged harassment, cyberbullying, intimidation and death threats by an influential political figure. Without initially naming the individual, she appealed to authorities for protection and an impartial investigation.

Soon afterwards, Saqib Chadhar’s name surfaced in media reports. The lawmaker rejected the allegations, maintaining that the two had shared a close relationship for several years and that the dispute was being misrepresented.

As the allegations gained traction, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) summoned both parties and recorded their statements. The matter intensified when Momina formally sought legal action, alleging cyber harassment, blackmail, interference in her personal life and attempts to sabotage her marriage.

The case quickly moved beyond social media.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz publicly stated that the matter would be handled strictly according to law and without political influence. Subsequently, a cybercrime case was registered against Chadhar and others named in the complaint.

The lawmaker, however, denied wrongdoing and secured interim pre-arrest bail from a Lahore court, arguing that the allegations were false and that evidence would ultimately vindicate him.

Meanwhile, social media became a battleground.

Supporters of Momina portrayed the case as a test of whether influential figures could be held accountable, while Chadhar’s supporters questioned the timing and motives behind the accusations. Old controversies linked to the politician resurfaced online, further fuelling public debate.

Despite the legal dispute, Momina proceeded with her wedding, which many supporters viewed as a symbol of resilience amid intense public scrutiny.

The Climax?

Legally, the story has not yet reached its conclusion. The true climax will not be determined by viral hashtags, television debates or competing social media narratives, but by the outcome of the ongoing investigation and court proceedings.

For now, the saga stands at a critical crossroads. One version portrays a woman seeking justice against harassment and abuse of influence. The other depicts a former personal relationship that deteriorated into a bitter public and legal confrontation.

Until investigators complete their work and courts assess the evidence, the final chapter of the Momina Iqbal–Saqib Chadhar saga remains unwritten.

Based on developments up to June 2026, the immediate climax is the registration of the NCCIA cybercrime case and the court’s grant of interim bail to Saqib Chadhar. The ultimate climax, however, will be the legal outcome of the investigation and trial.
