Banning of electronic and social media to tame raging clerics will not work for PML-N govt

By Iram Salim

(Pak Destiny) Saturday was the black day for social networking sites – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,  DailyMotion, and Instagram – and private TV channels in Pakistan as these have been banned for none other reason but to tame the raging clerics.

This is first time in Pakistan that electronic and social media are banned simultaneously.  The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority were ordered to ‘plug off’ the electronic and new media.

“I fail to understand why the PNL-N government has gone unnerved completely. It could have handled this issue in the very beginning but it took it lightly. Today the clerics of bralvi sect has taken hostage every thing … people are fearful of them as they are using the name of religion,” an official of law enforcement agencies told Pak Destiny. He said it seems now the days of Abbasi government are numbered and it is matter of days that the PML-N government is sent packing.

This is first time that a civilian government imposed ban on electronic and social media simultaneously. Ppak Destiny
