ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani government is reportedly uneasy over the appointment of Richard Grenell, fearing his potential influence on international narratives regarding the country’s political landscape. Grenell, a staunch supporter of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has previously criticized the government’s legitimacy and the legal cases against the PTI leader.
Adding to the government’s concerns is Grenell’s consistent condemnation of the treatment of Imran Khan, who remains behind bars under what he and his supporters describe as illegitimate and politically motivated charges. With more than 200 cases filed against the PTI chairman, Grenell has repeatedly demanded his immediate release and highlighted what he calls a blatant abuse of power by the current administration.
Sources suggest the government perceives Grenell as a “nightmare,” especially given his vocal advocacy for Khan’s release and his repeated denunciation of the alleged misuse of the judicial system. Analysts believe PTI’s celebratory reaction to his appointment is indicative of potential lobbying efforts or aligned interests, raising concerns within the ruling coalition.
Observers note that Grenell’s appointment could amplify criticism of the government’s policies and heighten international scrutiny, adding to the administration’s political challenges. This development further polarizes an already fragile political environment in Pakistan, with PTI leveraging the narrative of foreign allies backing their cause.
For now, all eyes remain on how this appointment may shape global perspectives on Pakistan’s internal affairs.
