By Iram Salim (Pakdestiny) Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority still appears to be toothless as it only has fined one TV channel and the fine is not more than Rs100,000 (one lakh). Is it a joke?

Besides issuing of notices to some private TV channels, it still shy to slap heavy fines on them. From Geo to SAMMA and Royal to Neo the PEMRA has still go to long way for establishing its writ by noticing what these channels are doing.

It slapped Rs100,000 fine on ARY News for the use of vulgar language in three different programs and not having time-delay system in place.

The programs in question were Khara Sach (aired February 9, 2015), 11th Hour with Waseem Badami (aired October 27, 2015) and Marathon Election Transmission (aired October 10, 2015).

While Neo anchor Reham Khan violated the code of conduct and mentioned the name of the gang-rape victim in her talk show a couple of weeks ago. PEMRA was sleeping over this otherwise, it could have taken strict action against Reham and the channel for revealing the name of gang-rape victim in Lahore. She must learn that this is against the journalism code of ethics.

Similarly, a number of other such violations are being committed by various channels on a daily basis but PEMRA does not bother. Pakdestiny
