The Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday finally  handed over 10-year jail term to PTI main Punjab leadership for their crime of May 9.

Dr Yasmin Rashid, Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, former Punjab governor Sarfraz Cheema and former minister Mahmoodur Rashid and others were convicted in a case related to violence on Sherpao Bridge, Lahore.

Following the arrest of ex-premier Imran Khan on May 9, 2023, from the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) premises, riots erupted across the country and went on for at least 24 hours. Protesters vandalised and torched government buildings and military installations, while also breaking into the residence of the Lahore corps commander. The state subsequently launched a crackdown against him and his party, filing several other cases against Imran and party leaders since the events of May 9.

However the court acquitted former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

After the “landmark decision”  PTI interim Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said there was now “an addition to the controversial cases of Pakistan’s judiciary” after today’s legal developments.

PTI senior leader and former federal minister Moonis Elahi said on X: “Height of injustice —  In the baseless cases of May 9, the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Bhachar, MNA Ahmad Chattha, Bilal Ijaz, and dozens of workers have been wrongfully and harshly sentenced to 10 years by the anti-terrorism court in the May 9 case.”

The PTI other leadership lambasted that the selected regime of Shehbaz Sharif for controlling the judicial system to extract the decisions of their choice.

“It is black day for Pakistan judicial system,” the PTI said. PAK DESTINY
