Islamabad — Richard Grenell, the former acting Director of National Intelligence under Donald Trump and recently appointed envoy for special missions, hit back at Pakistan’s prominent news channel, Geo News, after their controversial reference to him. Geo News reportedly highlighted Grenell’s sexual orientation while reporting on his appointment, framing the story as Donald Trump choosing “a gay person” for the envoy role.

Taking to his X account, formerly known as Twitter, Grenell responded sharply: “I say it again, Geo News: Free Imran Khan.” Grenell’s comments underline his longstanding support for former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alongside his advocacy for human rights in the country.

The statement comes amid Grenell’s vocal criticism of recent political events in Pakistan. On November 26, he highlighted protests in Islamabad, calling for Khan’s release and urging global attention to what he described as human rights violations. “Release Imran Khan,” he posted, reiterating his concern over the detention of the PTI leader and growing political unrest.

Grenell’s sharp rebuttal has sparked discussions about media ethics and the portrayal of international political figures. Supporters of Imran Khan and PTI have echoed Grenell’s response, accusing local media outlets of bias in their reporting.

The controversy highlights the increasing international focus on Pakistan’s political climate as voices like Grenell’s continue to push for greater transparency and justice for opposition leaders. Geo News has yet to respond to Grenell’s statement.
