A fine of Rs1million has also been imposed on Geo News and the channel is further directed to activate in-house editorial committee to ensure compliance of the Code of Conduct 2015 and use time-delay mechanism effectively. In case of non-compliance, a process for suspension of license, under Section 30 of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 as amended by PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2007 shall be initiated.
On receiving a number of complaints from the citizens and senior journalists, a show cause notice was issued on March 15, 2017 to Geo News, asking them to explain their position within 14 days. However, after providing opportunity of personal hearing and examining the channel’s representatives’ reply, the Authority concluded that by showing the objectionable content, Geo News has violated Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015.
The Geo is asked to stop “Geo Pakistan” from broadcasting or re-broadcasting, fresh, old or repeat on Geo News for a period of five (05) days starting from Monday 9:00AM on April 3, 2017 till April 7, 2017 12.00 midnight for airing objectionable/indecent content.
An objectionable scene has actually cost Geo Rs1m and five day ban. Hope other channels will be careful in future. – Pak Destiny
